The session demystifies online transformation leadership in the civil society by introducing online tools and modules that can be used to understand a given context, organize activist and volunteer groups and bring new mediums to the advancement of civil rights causes in critical contexts; especially where access to the internet may be limited due to political, economic or cultural conditions.

تهدف الجلسة إلى توضيح غموض التحوّل عبر الإنترنت في المجتمع المدني، من خلال تقديم أدوات ووحدات عبر الإنترنت يمكن استخدامها لفهم سياق معين، وتنظيم مجموعات الناشطين والمتطوعين، والاستعانة وسائط جديدة لقضايا النهوض بالحقوق المدنية في السياقات الحرجة؛ خصوصاً عندما يكون الوصول إلى الإنترنت محدودًا بسبب الظروف السياسية أو الاقتصادية أو الثقافية.

This workshop aims to give insight in setting up an IT business and showcase relevant business models based in the MENA region.
During 60 minutes the speaker will give examples of social entrepreneurship in IT and Tech-sector, and present two showcases told by founders of start-ups/businesses: their story and business models (outsourcing/education/new product), followed by Q&A.

A body you may never have heard of is influencing decisions about content moderation that
impact our region. The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) was originally formed in 2017 by Microsoft, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter as a “shared industry database of ‘hashes’—unique digital ‘fingerprints’—for violent terrorist imagery or terrorist recruitment videos or images that we have removed from our services.” Since then, offline violence with an online aspect has become an increasing concern of policymakers, and they’ve turned to automated content moderation - and GIFCT- to address the online aspect of terrorism - a term that few legal systems, countries, or human rights experts agree on. At the same time, content from our region, including human rights documentation and important political speech, is increasingly impacted by these tools and policy decisions.

Join us for a Q&A with Nick Rasmussen, the Executive Director of GIFCT. GIFCT was recently
revamped as an NGO with an Executive Director, an Independent Advisory Committee, and
multiple working groups, and has been increasingly engaged in civil society.

Foreign intervention online, both real and perceived, has broadly undermined confidence in the authenticity of political discourse across the region and beyond. Twitter and Facebook, once touted as technology that would facilitate democratization movements across North Africa and the Middle East, have been substantially polluted by automated accounts and fake pages. State-backed information operations targeting and originating from MENA have led to a deeply polarized information landscape. Narratives pushed by these inauthentic networks are often filtered through proxy news sources. In this session, we will present important features of these campaigns and introduce examples of previous info ops. We will explain how Twitter's API can be harnessed to help civil society uncover operations that disrupt authentic political discourse online.

The session will be moderated by Professor Abderrazak Ben Hamida from iCompass. The session outline is the importance of chatbot for connecting vulnerable people to services. The talk will be around the Tunisian chatbot 3ziza used to rescue Tunisian vulnerable groups during the pandemic.

Rodrigue Hajjar (Director of VPN, TunnelBear) and PoohBear (Community Manager, TunnelBear) talk us through ESNI, the next frontier in online privacy. Rodrigue and PoohBear will discuss the VPN provider's ESNI implementation as it relates to TunnelBear's anti-censorship initiative and the wider internet freedom community.

During this workshop, Britta will present 5 steps to convert your Face to Face workshop into an interactive online workshop, and we will test some tools that make digital training easier. The workshop ends with a Q&A session and a discussion of e-training experiences.

The session will overview both law and case law pertaining to data protection in MENA and assess the privacy implications of these legal frameworks. The legal landscape of data protection will be explored through a case study: COVID-19 contact tracing apps. The session will use Cyrilla’s database and research methodology to examine and compare law and case law pertaining to data, privacy and surveillance across jurisdictions in the Middle East.

In this session we are going to look into how the policies and practices of telecommunication and technology companies affect digital rights in the region. We will also address  how organizations in the region can use the Ranking Digital Rights Corporate Accountability Index in their research and advocacy efforts aimed at the private sector. At the end of the session, we will share recommendations for companies.

Late in 2018, Mark Zuckerberg started talking about Facebook Supreme Court. During 2019, Facebook published its first draft charter about an Oversight Board. Now, the board is functioning and is receiving cases for appeal.

We are hosting Thomas Hughes, the director of oversight board, to discuss the work and processes of the board, challenges around freedom of expression that this board might solve, and whether this is enough.

The session will explain the domain name system; i.e. top-level domains, domain names, and root-servers. It will then share some statistics on the surge in DNS queries during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Then, we will move to talk about the work undertaken by the domain name industry when it comes to abusive behaviour of some domain names and the joint effort undertaken to detect them and bring them down; if any. Finally, we will talk about DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and its importance to domain name registrants; including YOU.

There have been no new laws to govern speech in Lebanon, but so many things have changed in freedom of expression.
One major change is increased connectivity of course. This led to changes in citizens' perceptions of politics, government, politicians, etc. From the October 17 uprising to the economic collapse, and the August 4 explosion, all these incidents and catastrophes exponentially opened the space for citizens to express themselves with some pushback from the state representatives. The numbers of detainees is no doubt on the rise, but the space for expression is wider now. During this session, we will discuss the potential threats, and future opportunities to gain more space for expression in Lebanon.

لم تصدر قوانين جديدة حول حرية التعبير في لبنان، ولكنّ الكثير من الأمور قد تغيرت مثل تطوّر وسائل التواصل والاتصال، وبالتالي تغيّر نظرة المواطنين إلى السياسة والحكومة والسياسيين وغيرهم/ن. وفي الاونة الأخيرة، شهد لبنان الكثير من الحوادث، من انتفاضة 17 تشرين الثاني/أكتوبر، مروراً بالانهيار الاقتصادي، وصولاً إلى انفجار 4 آب/أغسطس؛ وهي حوادث ساهمت في دفع المواطنين للتعبير أكثر عن أنفسهم في وجه المسؤولين الحكوميين. ترافق ذلك مع ازدياد أعداد الموقوفين بسبب التعبير عن الرأي، ولكنّ مساحة التعبير بقيت، بل وأصبحت الآن أوسع. خلال هذه الجلسة، سنناقش التهديدات المحتملة لحرية التعبير في لبنان، والفرص الممكنة للحفاظ على مساحة التعبير هذه وتوسيعها.

We will come prepared with background on why we are designing Leafcutter and some simple wireframes and user stories. It will be an interactive conversation with participants to provide input to our assumptions and design, and for them to share their needs, concerns, and other input.

Trainers, designers and developers working in security and privacy from different regions will get to meet and learn about each other's work. The four of us will be creating activities to get to know each other, as well as to identify interests and opportunities for future collaborations.
Most importantly, we want this to be a community space, rather than a learning-oriented session. Participants will be invited to join the Human Rights-Centered Design community. The intent is for people working in design, digital security education, research, and development of security tools to feel more connected to each other.

In this session, we will present the research conducted so far on the role of digital evidence in the prosecution of the queer community, focusing on Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia. In conducting the research as part of her fellowship project for the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University, Afsaneh Rigot worked with in-country lawyers and experts to review court documents, legal background and laws, as well as conducting in-depth interviews with the main lawyers involved in Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia. We will also discuss some understudied elements of the judicial systems, especially those related to using digital evidence and prosecutions of queer identity. In the session, we will be joined by Youmna Makhlouf from Lebanon and Alaa Khemiri from Tunisia, two of the prominent lawyers tirelessly working on these cases in their respective countries. We will also have an Egypt representative.

This is the first research on vital aspects of digital evidence in these prosecutions. One that will lead to many, we hope. The research and work looks to provide insight for new advocacy methods, legal strategies across-countries and to bring company change by the implicated digital companies.

في هذه الجلسة سوف نقدم البحث الذي تم إجراؤه حتى الآن حول دور الأدلة الرقمية في ملاحقة أفراد المجتمع الكويري، مع التركيز على مصر ولبنان وتونس. أثناء إجراء البحث كجزء من مشروع الزمالة الخاص لمركز بيركمان كلاين في جامعة هارفارد، عملت أفسانيه ريجوت مع محامين وخبراء في الدولة لمراجعة وثائق المحكمة والخلفية القانونية والقوانين، بالإضافة إلى إجراء مقابلات متعمقة مع المحامين الرئيسيين العاملين في مصر ولبنان وتونس. سنناقش أيضًا بعض العناصر غير المدروسة في الأنظمة القضائية، خاصة تلك المتعلقة باستخدام الأدلة الرقمية والملاحقات القضائية للهوية المثلية. تنضم إلينا في الجلسة يمنى مخلوف من لبنان وعلاء الخميري من تونس، وهما من المحامين البارزين الذين يعملون بلا كلل على هذه القضايا في بلديهما. سيكون لدينا أيضا ممثل مصر.

Almost all civil society organizations (CSOs) have an online presence nowadays, for example through
online campaigning on civic space, organizing e-gatherings or even sending out newsletters or using
email and messengers.
Many CSOs are – even though they work online – not necessarily aware that they are exercising their
human rights online and that laws can infringe these rights and their ability to engage and advocate
online. Moreover, civil society leaders sometimes say they do not know anything about tech and do
not expect a cyberlaw to impact them.
This session will show how ICNL in Jordan, Seeds in Lebanon and We Youth in Tunisia developed
their online presence, digital protection tactics and digital legal literacy without prior knowledge
about computers. The talk show aims to inspire narratives to motivate civil society groups that work
on a wide range of issues – such as NGO laws, environmental issues, climate change or women’s
rights – to increase learning about and engaging with digital issues.

في الوقت الحاضر، ينشط تقريباً جميع منظمات المجتمع المدني على الإنترنت، سواء من خلال حملات رقمية أو تنظيم تجمعات إلكترونية، أو حتى إرسال الرسائل الإخبارية أو استخدام البريد الإلكتروني وغرف المحادثات. في المقابل، الكثير من منظمات المجتمع المدني - على الرغم من أنّها تعمل عبر الإنترنت -لا تدرك بالضرورة أنّها تمارس حقوق الإنسان على الإنترنت وأنّ القوانين يمكن أن تنتهك تلك الحقوق وتحدّ من قدرتها على إشراك الناس وكسب التأييد عبر الإنترنت. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يعتقد قادة المجتمع المدني في بعض الأحيان أنّهم لا يعرفون شيئًا عن التكنولوجيا ولا يتوقعون أن تؤثر القوانين المتعلقة بالإنترنت عليهم/ن.

COVID-19 forced many humanitarian organisations to rapidly adopt digital tools like Whatsapp to share information with crisis-affected populations, and to deliver services like education, health information, and mental health support. Crisis-affeted populations increasingly have access to mobile internet access and use social media like Whatsapp and Facebook. Humanitarian organisations want to "meet people where they are," yet "where they are" may pose privacy risks.

How do we balance the right to privacy with other rights like the right to education?
How can we digitally communicate and engage with crisis-affected communities, responsibly and ethically? How might international aid organisations work with social media companies in a way that supports digital rights?

We will also take some time to hear from the audience and to discuss strategies for how you might use the platform, and what you might want from the platform to support your own work.

The content moderation policies of social media companies violate Palestinian digital rights, as it doesn't take into consideration the Palestinian context, and therefore Palestinian content is being takedown from these platforms. This session will discuss the impact of content moderation policies on Palestinian digital rights and the right to freedom of expression.

Encrypted messengers have become extremely common over the last few years. Lots of us have Signal, Wire, WhatsApp, or Telegram installed on our phones — just to name a few. But encryption is only one part of the step. Are we truly safe when we chat using these apps?
State-level actors have proven they have tactics for attacking these apps — signals surveillance, encryption-breaking regulation, and SIM-swapping attacks, are some examples.
In this session, we learn about Session — a new private messenger which is secure and anonymous. Using a combination of encryption, onion routing, and the removal of phone numbers, Session helps protect against threats that other messengers can't.

Simon Harman from the Loki Foundation — the creators of Session — will walk you through how to use Session, including how to create an account, find people to message, and share your details safely. Simon will also share some tips around building your own personal threat model for communication, and what other tools may be useful in conjunction with Session to communicate safely.
